The Memory of the Living, a Harmony of Chaos
About
The Memory of the Living
Emmanuel Monziès’s work revolves around a quest for harmony born from chaos.
His pieces emerge from a principle of recomposition: using fragments obtained through monotype, he assembles imprints from the plant world—roots, twigs, seeds, or leaf fragments—to create mosaics and collages. Each fragment, derived from these organic materials, becomes a singular imprint, both unpredictable and spontaneous. Taken in isolation, these elements appear as scattered shards. Yet, when recomposed into mosaics or collages, they reveal a new continuity and harmony.
This approach reflects a deep desire to remain connected to the living world. The materials he uses are both tangible elements of our environment and symbols of our deepest roots, the foundational soil that binds us to nature. Monziès’s works are not abstracted from reality; rather, they are rooted abstractions, carrying the memory of the living.
The etching press holds a central place in Emmanuel Monziès’s practice. He favors monotype, a printing technique that embraces spontaneity while leaving room for the unexpected. Multiple passes through the press generate unforeseen textures and layered traces, akin to a stratification of life transposed onto paper. His inks—deep blues, bluish grays, intense reds, and luminous yellows—enhance the meditative, almost monochromatic quality of his compositions.
